Recently we posted a blog regarding equine massage therapy schools and we have received some positive feedback wanting to know more about it. Today we are following up with information that you should know when you look at equine massage therapy schools in order to make the right choice for you.
Consider the School’s Purpose
As you create a list of potential equine massage therapy schools and programs, be sure to consider whether the school’s purpose aligns with your goals. Some schools are designed to teach students the basics on how to massage their own horses, while other schools have more in-depth programs designed to prepare students for careers in equine massage.
Look at the Curriculum and Areas Covered
Request a list of the schools’ curricula for the programs that you are considering. Look over the curriculum and compare them to each other. What does one offer that another does not? If there is a particular area that you want to focus on, like massaging sport horses, then be sure that the program you choose includes adequate instruction in that area.
Find Out How Much Hands-On Work Is Involved
While book work is necessary to learn equine anatomy and the basics of massage, hands-on work is also highly important. Find out how much time you’ll be spending working directly with horses and look into how much of this work takes place in the instructor’s presence so that you can receive real-time feedback.
Research the Instructor’s Experience and Qualifications
A program is only as good as its instructor, so take a look into the instructor’s credentials and background. You will want to find a program with an instructor who has many years of experience in equine massage therapy, where they were educated and if they have any special qualifications and/or achievements.
Speak with Program Graduates
Finally, ask to speak with some alumni of the program. Talk with them about what their experience in the school was like, what they got out of the school, what they wish had been included in their schooling and what their experiences have been post-graduation. Program graduates can provide you with information and insight that you might not find elsewhere.
As you research the different equine massage schools and programs available certain schools will begin to stick out to you as potential matches. Make a list of pros and cons for each of these schools to help you make your final choice, and best of luck with your studies.
